Some Background Toronto Stock Exchange Information

This page contains some general Toronto Stock Exchange information gleaned from research used for a personal investment (by your author) in 2004.

The S&P;/TSX 60 Index is a list of the 60 largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange as measured by market capitalization. This Canadian index offers exposure across 10 economic sectors. It is the third most active stock exchange in North America, behind the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ.

Being such a large country and having such vast deposits of natural resources, the Canadian Stock Exchanges are dominated by energy and materials / resources companies. Many of the world's largest mining firms can be found either here or listed in Australia.

During the Great Depression, the value of stocks fell substantially. To cope with the economic crisis, the TSE merged with the Toronto Stock and Mining Exchange. This little piece of history is the main reason for the predominance of natural resource company listings.

Created in 1868, the TSME was the principal competitor of the TSE. By 1936, the TSE had become North America’s third largest exchange. Since then, the trading volume and value have continued to grow.

The fully automated Toronto Stock Exchange generally accounts for approximately 95% of all equity trading in Canada.

There are a number of indices used: TSE 300 Composite Index® Stock Index, TSE 300 Capped Index, Toronto 35 Index® Stock Index, TSE 200 Index, TSE 100 Index® Stock Index, S&P;/TSE 60 ® Stock Index, S&P; TSE 60 Capped Index, S&P;/TSE SmallCap ® Stock Index and the S&P;/TSE MidCap ® Stock Index.

As you can see, before taking the plunge and investing, there is more Toronto Stock Exchange information that needs to be understood and assessed.
